Natural Finish

Despite the gradual westernization of Japanese lifestyle, removing of shoes at the entrance of a home is still customary. This act is partly due to the country’s extreme climate of hot and humid summers and freezing cold winters. By using solid wood as the main source for flooring, eases winter’s sting on initial contact and is soft and dry to the touch during the hot and sticky summers. Gentle to the touch, it also pervades a sweet scent that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Linseed oil and vegetable oil is commonly used for maintaining the surface of the wood flooring.

Urushi Stain Finish

Urushi finishing on solid wood flooring is not only for cosmetic purposes but holds practical benefits as well. Urushi is water-resistant yet is allows the wood to breath and regulate its humidity level. Because of its resistance to water, cleaning is easy and will not corrode even when cleaning chemicals are used. Urushi stain finishes compliment the natural grains of the wood and can be reapplied to create different shades. It is also known to have a pleasant texture on bare feet.
