The handles that commonly adorn traditional Japanese sliding doors and cabinet drawers are called “Hikite”. Using traditional methods and technique, the patterns and designs of past generations still offer distinguished accent to sliding doors and cabinet drawers of today. Though generally small in size, the “Hikite” in its own right, stands out as an undeniable form of art. “Makie”, often seen on traditional lacquer work is a process which involves creating designs with gold powder over Urushi paint and images. “Urushi shin-nuri” is also another lacquering method which is used not only for aesthetic purposes but for its durability as well. It is known for holding its beauty even after years of use. The wood typically used for urushi stain finish is the Keyaki(Japanese zelkova). The Keyaki along with the Kuri(Japanese chestnut) is often used for natural finishes.
